The Hartselle Police Department K-9 program was formed approximately seven
years ago . Our K-9, Argo, is a three year old German Shephard, his handler is
Sgt. Kel Roberts. Sgt. Roberts and Argo are certified through the United States
Police Canine Association (U.S.P.C.A.) and must compete in a regional
certification trial. The K-9 Unit attends biweekly training at the Huntsville Police
K-9 Range to constantly achieve a higher standard of training and knowledge in
the search for narcotics. Argo is certified on most illegal narcotics including
Marijuana, Cocaine, Heroin, along with several other types of narcotics. Our K-9
unit is on 3rd shift patrol, however maintains a 24hr, 7day a week on call status
making the canine available to all shifts and special operations. The K-9 unit also
conducts random school searches in the city and assist surrounding agencies
with the searching of vehicles and residences.
